Packing a bike for transport starts with its finish, exposed parts and accessories. This guide explains what foam, bubble wrap and corrugated protection do, how packing differs from securing, and what to check before pickup and after delivery.

Take clear photographs of panels, the tank, mirrors, levers and accessories. Record existing marks and relevant condition details. Photographs taken only after wrapping cannot show every surface. Keep the record with the booking details for the receiving inspection.

Understand what each packing material does

Cushioning and outer wrapping have different roles. Foam or other suitable padding may be used at vulnerable surfaces; an outer layer can help hold the packing together. The material selection should suit the bike, its finish and the points most exposed during handling.

Ask which components will be protected and how contact points will be handled. Corrugated protection, bubble wrap, foam or another material may be discussed for the booking, with the combination chosen for the model and its handling needs. Ask about crating separately if your vehicle requires it.

A three-layer bike packing checklist

Use these checks to agree on the packing scope for your model before collection:

1. Cushioning: ask where bubble wrap or suitable padding will protect the tank, panels and contact points.
2. Corrugated protection: confirm reinforcement around vulnerable surfaces, mirrors, levers and other exposed fittings.
3. Crate or cage: ask whether one is needed for your bike and handling plan, how it will be secured and whether it is included in the quote.

A crate is not assumed for every bike booking. The materials, components protected and loading arrangement should be listed in the agreed scope.

Pay attention to exposed components

A large panel is easy to notice, but a small lever, indicator or mirror can also need protection. Show the team a windscreen, panniers, a top box, phone mount or other addition before packing is agreed.

Do not remove parts simply because a generic checklist says to do so. Confirm what preparation is appropriate for your model and who is responsible for it. Keep loose belongings and personal documents with you.

Packing is not the same as securing

Wrapping protects vulnerable surfaces; securing helps keep the bike stable during movement. A fully wrapped bike still needs suitable loading and placement. Ask how the packed vehicle will be handled and which securing arrangement will be used.

Tell the team whether the bike starts, rolls, steers and brakes. A non-running motorcycle may require a different loading plan, which should be agreed before collection.

Prepare for pickup and delivery

Share the full collection address, parking position and gate contact. If the bike is at a campus, rented property or controlled-entry society, confirm who can release it and where the handover can occur.

Follow the fuel or battery instructions agreed for your model and transport arrangement. Road transport, battery requirements and other modes can involve different preparation; a single fuel instruction should not be applied to every booking.

Check what the estimate includes

Ask whether the quote includes packing material, collection, loading, transport, unloading and destination delivery. Confirm any separate packing or accessory-handling charges. Coverage is also booking-specific: request the applicable terms instead of assuming every wrapped component or personal item is insured.

Inspect at delivery

Compare the motorcycle with the pickup photographs. Check the exposed parts, panels and accessories with the receiving team. Record any concern and discuss it before completing the handover documents. Keep relevant packing, transport and coverage records for follow-up.

Make a model-specific packing checklist

For a scooter, point out the front apron, footboard, mirrors and any storage-box fittings. For a motorcycle, discuss the tank, fairings, levers, indicators, exhaust and any fitted luggage. Photograph those areas while they are visible, then agree which parts will be cushioned and what outer protection is included.

List any accessories that are removed and confirm how they will be identified and handed over. Ask the receiving person to allow time for the agreed unpacking and condition check. Tell the team about an electric model or battery modification before collection so they can confirm the preparation and handling requirements for that vehicle.
